Testimonials

  • I would highly recommend the reading program if your child is struggling with reading. Our daughter has been part of the reading program for 1 1/2 years and her reading ability has greatly improved. We are most thankful for the increase we now see in her self-esteem and the confidence she now has in her reading. Monique and Amanda have been so patient and kind and have built a great rapport with Cara.

  • My son has been completing the online reading/spelling program at the Foundations for Learning. We are very pleased of his progress, he has gained confidence in his reading ability and fluency. Beth is an amazing instructor, she provides instructions in a kind and supportive fashion. My son prefers the online learning. He likes learning from the comfort of home and he really takes the responsibility to be ready for each session. We would highly recommend the online sessions.

  • We have been doing our lessons via Skype for about 3 years now. Bryce likes that he can work in the comfort of his own home. In the years we have been working with Sharon Bryce has been doing Extraordinarily well. Meet via video chat has not deterred him from excelling. I think in some ways it has helped. Thank you for all you do, Bryce would not be where he is today if it wasn’t for your patients and guidance as well as all his hard work.

  • "I started taking my son, Willem, to Foundations for Learning approximately 2 years ago now. When we started I was deeply concerned with Willem’s reading. He wasn’t interested in reading, he would become overwhelmed and shut down. Just doing the alphabet was a chore and he was falling behind in school. We had already exhausted all of the programs at school to help with his reading. We were at a point where a learning disability had been suggested. After talking to a couple of friends, Foundations for Learning was recommended. They had their children in the program and highly recommend it. We gave it a try and I can’t say enough about how amazing it has been for Willem. He was quickly assessed with lacking confidence and an effective program was set up around that. He went from a boy who would not do the alphabet to a boy who will now grab a book to read to me. He will now write little notes to me and makes notes about some of his favorite books. I never thought that we would get to this point and certainly wouldn’t have without their help. I should also mention that when Willem first started school he had a speech impediment, but because of the work with phonics at Foundations for Learning, Willem now speaks clearly and no longer requires speech therapy. I can’t say enough about how happy I have been with Willem’s tutoring. He is almost caught up with his peers at school and for a little boy, that means everything!"

  • "We discovered our youngest child was dyslexic after an assessment we had privately done in May of 2017. Kale was reading at a middle-of-the-road Grade 1 level, while in Grade 2. We learned that Foundations for Learning was opening a second office in Truro and we got him in right away. With lots of hard work and a great teacher like Jo-Ann, our boy is now at the end of Grade 2-level reading. In one year he has moved one and a half grades in his reading! He has gained confidence and is more ready to go to school each morning; he's no longer upset and crying about going. I’m very grateful for everything Jo-Ann has done with helping Kale. We are continuing his learning with Foundations for Learning as children have the right and need to grow with confidence in their learning. Thanks, Foundations for Learning for all that you do!"

  • "Our son has been working with Sharon at Foundations For Learning for over a year now. As we live an hour away we have been using a webcam for his reading lessons. Using this tool, our son is able to be in his own environment where he feels more comfortable. When our son started lessons he was below his grade level in reading, but with hard work and Sharon’s patience’s and teaching techniques, he is now catching up. Sharon has not only helped him with his reading but also with his confidence to do so. Our son has become a confident reader with all of her help. This proves that distance learning works just as well as sitting face-to-face with someone."

  • "I have Dyslexia and Sharon teaches me in the way that I can learn. I like doing my lessons on webcam at home because there is less of a distraction and Sharon can schedule a time that works best for me. I like doing Raz Kids and it supports me in reading. I like that I can finally read!"

  • "I can't say enough about how Sharon at Foundations for Learning has helped our daughter! I also love the convenience of the chat software and not having to commute to a tutor. The systems are amazing and personalized. Our girl jumped a couple of grade levels in word reading, spelling and comprehension after working with Sharon twice a week for the last year and a bit. I highly recommend Sharon and her company!"

  • "Thanks to Foundations for Learning's summer math program, our son, Ty is top five in his grade 4 class for multiplication quizzes! Ty had difficulty at the end of grade 3 understanding multiplication; turns out it was because he never fully understood how to add and subtract. At Foundations for Learning, they go back to the basics and Ty really enjoyed the summer. You can see the self-confidence and excitement on his face. Thank you!"

  • "If you are looking for support for your child on their learning journey, talk to Sharon! Our son started working with Sharon last summer. Right away she built a rapport with him by playing games and making what they were working on fun. He never minded going to see her and gained confidence by learning new ways of approaching reading and spelling. Sharon gives him ongoing feedback that makes him proud of the work he is doing."

  • "Sharon at Foundations for Learning has helped me with my writing, reading, and spelling. My marks continue to climb with Sharon's help. My confidence in myself has improved and I am now able to speak in front of my class and participate better in the 4-H Speech Day. Thanks, Sharon!!"

  • "My daughter is 8-years-old and was struggling with reading in school, even though she was receiving extra help 4 days/week! We started Foundations for Learning and have noticed huge gains within weeks of beginning the program. Sharon's knowledge of children and their learning patterns is evident as I sit and listen to my daughter's sessions! She is wonderful with children and they respond to her with eagerness to learn!"

  • "Our nine-year-old son has been in early French immersion since primary. Last year, we noticed his English reading skills were not improving. So, we enrolled him in a summer program at Mariposa Reading Centre in Elmsdale with Sharon. Sharon made each lesson so fun; he actually looked forward to going each day. Writing was also an issue. Sharon helped him with simple, easy to remember, gestures or rhythms. We have our son enrolled again this summer to work with Sharon at Foundations for Learning to continue to improve his reading level…and he is looking forward to it! What nine-year-old boy looks forward to reading lessons? We are so lucky to have this program available to us in our area and Sharon is wonderful with the children!”

  • "My 8-year old daughter Emiley is in grade 3 and was uninterested in school. She struggled to grasp the basic concepts of math. Although she seemed to be unfocused in class, she wasn’t disrupting the class; therefore, “slipped through the cracks.” After report card day, I met with her teacher and discussed alternatives for Emiley. I asked her teacher about Mariposa, which is now Foundations for Learning. The teacher’s response? “It is a phenomenal program.” Sharon has been working with Emiley since November 2014 and her grades have improved drastically. Along with her academic improvement, she is focused in class, eager to participate, enjoys doing her homework, and cannot wait until she meets with Sharon!”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between your center and other tutoring services?

At Foundations for Learning we start at the beginning and build a solid foundation in the basics. We believe that in order for a child to succeed she/he has to have a good grasp of the basics before they can move on to more difficult steps.
Our reading and spelling program is a phonological awareness program that teaches your child about the individual sounds and how they blend together to read words and how you can break the sounds apart to spell words. From there, we move into sentences, paragraphs, and books.
Our math program is a Canadian-based math program that starts from the ground up. It builds a solid foundation in the basics of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Each unit is broken into small parts which helps your child master the areas that he is weak in.

How long are your sessions?

Each session last 50 minutes.

How long will it take my child to complete the reading program?

This is a difficult question to answer without understanding what areas your child is struggling in and why they are struggling. We tell parents to plan on at least a school year, depending on the age of the child when they start. The younger the student, the smaller the gap is to close.

Are you open in the summer time?

Yes, we are open all year round. We quite often see students intensively over the summer months to help them be more prepared for the new school year.

Where are you located?

We have centers in Elmsdale and Truro Nova Scotia. We also work on-line with students who are unable to attend our centres.

Do you work in groups or one-on-one with students?

We always work one-on-one with our students in order to tailor the programs to meet your child’s needs.

Will my child be assigned homework?

Yes, once your child has gone through the initial parts of the programs, your child will have small amounts of practice to complete each day.

How often does my child have to attend?

In order for your child to have success, they must attend at least 2-3 times per week.
